New Level of Confidence and power

The past couple of days have been really productive somehow, from the usual morning journey to the black box at Tworks, set-up/rehearse/dismantle format for this new production.

It is going to be the first new production with the 'new' KYTV which is now a duo after the departure of Dovan Ong and Jeremy Sharma. As I look back somehow, the past 5 years have been really colourful, but I am not going to go back there and re-live the life of my post teenage art eccentricity. As you know we are like the Pet Shop Boys of Art or something.

I realised it gets pretty freaky when you start to think about your past and start to glorify about it. But coming back to the now, Kenjiro san has been working really hard, staying over at the studio, working at an unearthly hour trying to get things right. We have been introducing him to variety of food daily (the thing about SIngapore), from Murtabak to Nasi Lemak to Mee Pok to Roti John. And he has been enjoying himself nevertheless.

My sleeping pattern is getting weirder, I slept at about 8pm just now, and woke up just to write all these.

‘Not Available On Print Date’
A performance In-between error and delusion
The concept of this performance is based on the idea of absorbing
current media fancy and the contemporary environment that have become
common commodities in our daily lives. Sometimes we are subjugated and
defeated by the constant influx of information that encompassed our
mind. The result is interestingly apparent in the sub-cultural aspect
of ‘post modernisation. This performance seeks to re-think the position
of a performance piece in a form of transgression, recognising varied
aesthetics and re-appropriating the usage of multi-media in art.
In all, the main attribute to this performance is to discover the celebration of life and hope,
not purposefully creating an illusion but to discover the relationship of error and
delusion.

The common theme that is driven in this piece is the idea of
‘totality’, in terms of the physical inter-relationship with performers, video, lights, sound and the audience. In other words, the standpoint between the common and established ground is blurred in the process of presentation. The skeleton of the process is revealed through the act of disseminating information to the audience, which is seldom revealed in most performances. The performers spontaneity, naturalness and impulsiveness form the basis of inter-reaction with
the multi-media elements.

About “Not Available On Print Date”
The performance conceptual framework aims to take on an unusual
position as the performer and creator, as we hope to develop an
interchangeable structure of the performance whereby individual
segments can be re-arranged based on the responses and voting of the
audience members at the beginning of the performance.
An introduction/preview video with explanation of the entire
performance with the creators preferred sequence will be presented as
the introduction to the performance. After the audience have a brief
understanding of the performance, they will then vote for the desired
order of the performance. With consensuses from the audience votes, we
will then present the performance according to the audience preferred
sequence. Thus the performance will unfold in a different format each
time the work is presented. In this first presentation,
3 out of the 6 scenes will be presented to the audience as a work-in-progress showing.

The Arrival of Kenjiro-san (Invisible Lab)

Kenjiro arrived last night, and we brought him out for supper at Mas Ayu, he was amazed with the food and took a photo of his meal. He had Mee Hoon Pattaya and he speaks pretty decent English which make our communication easier. Right after supper, he brought out his gadgets and sort them out on the table, he's like some sort of an Inspector Gadget with his own mechanism.

We have been diligently communicating with him for the past couple of months or so via email and msn, to see him in real-life suddenly feels like all so normal. A sound artist who has worked with the music to loads of playstation games and the recent 20th Anniversary of Mario Bros, he looks like he's 10 years younger for a 39 year old.

He will be joining KYTV for the first time in our new production entitled 'Not Available On Print Date', which will be held next Sunday at The Esplanade as part of the Sparks Development Programme, this is our second outing for the scheme, together with 3 other regulars in the scene, George Chua, Katak Kudung and Fared & Zizi. (who have collaborated with KYTV before)

Vijay Singh will be joining the team as a performer, together with XYN, our multi-tasking performer/stage manager and Woan Wen, lighting designer extraordinaire.

This team is refreshing somehow, hopefully the work will take its new meaning, as this will be the one and only local showing for the year. We will be taking this performance to Japan in November and UK the following year, and there we will work with other Japanese and UK performers respectively.

Lina Adam's first ever solo show, be there or don't be there at all.

The mind is more or less settled down since Jogja. KYTV's only local showing will be next week as part of Sparks presentation at The Esplanade. Kenjiro san will be arriving tonight, and it is going to be full-on preperation from today till the performance next Sunday.

The Artvsts guys have set up their space, and they are bunch of nice chumps, and these people create great illustrations, and the energy is refreshing nevertheless. Tiramisu is playing this Saturday at Fluid, but before that Lina Adam's first ever solo show at Soobin this Friday. Theatreworks opening their new space called 72-13 and lots of parties this September. And I am bad at remembering birthdays including mine.

I have been trying to keep up in shape as my love handles are developing progressively. It is better to be busy rather than being lazy, because the art of being busy is when you know it is going to be end of the year. And you look at yourself in the mirror, you realised the dark ring aroung your beautiful eyes. You get a bit freaky, because you realised you haven't had enough rest already.

But this nocturnal existence make us feel at one, working at such an unearthly hour is soothing. We grow up, we make decisions. And we become the slave to our own choices. Our Slavery becomes the joy of living, never a dull moment.

Relate - Action

People fall in love and out of love, but the complexities of a relationship can sometimes be as hard as understanding a talking blank wall. Well, are we all humans, the most difficult thing is to understand your flaws. I admire those people who have been together for like say 40 years...how lovely...

Back from a Time Warp

I am not sure of what to expect, especially when coming back from a slow moving city. The body has to re-adapt to the original setting and of course, laundry, things to settle, bills to pay, reservist, relationship, new projects, and the all-time familiar faces. I have only been away for 2 weeks, but it felt like 2 months.

From this trip I learnt a lot about hospitality, I feel guilty whenever friends from abroad come down for a visit, and I don't have that time to show them around. But its different in Yogya, they treat visitors like family, they will bring us to places where we have never been, or clubbing for example.

I went to a drum and bass club called Junction which cost about Rp10000 ($2) with a standard drink, and to some of them its pretty expensive. Though they played mid-90s drum and bass, it was fantastic. And the stretch road where they sell pirated dvds and cds. They even have pirated Pug Jelly or any other titles, you want it they have it....

The food...total soul food, the nasi padang we eat here can sometimes be seen as a bad replica of the nasi padang over there. The experience of Yogya this time is the most memorable ever, and can never be bought with any amount of money. We have forgotten what it is like to be sincere, honest, grateful or even simplest things in life. The people around you no matter where they are from.

I have to re-adjust soon, after all I am a Singaporean of a Javanese descent.

Last Sunday at Cemeti Art House, Yogyakarta

On a hot Sunday afternoon, we just sit back and relax....how nice...

Yogyakarta the southern Soul

I am in an internet cafe not far from the art space, the office computer is down. Basically, down here people don't really find the need to use the Internet unless it is really necessary. Kar Fai is still doing some last minute technical run of The P.O.P Station at the gallery.

We have been working non-stop since the day we came, its partly because the gallery is just next to where we live. Singaporeans being Singaporeans, the staff have been digilently stayed up till late with us in the gallery.

The working hours is like 9am - 4pm, by 6pm, so 8 pm is like pretty late for some of them, some of the staff, they live in the outskirt of the city. Meaning they have to pass through some padi fields or such.

The laidback (or they call it 'santai') culture here is pretty dominant, as you walk down the streets, people just love chilling out and living their life. We were talking the other day, in Singapore we all so bounded with stress and deadlines. Time is the enemy, here everything seems so relax and casual. In Singapore to chill out is equivalent to wasting time.

Nevertheless, we have been really productive in the gallery, with the workshops and finding materials for the project. Here, People share things, equipments etc., the community is strong knit. In Singapore, individualism is the virtue, sometimes I do question how lucky we all are.

The food is simple too, in the evening we eat 'Pecel Lele', rice with veggie, crispy catfish and es jeruk (Lime Juice). A meal for one could feed 4 hungry human beings here. I am enjoying every second of my time here, Rizky said Yogyakarta is like SIngapore in the 50s, maybe he's right. I am in a time warp with my contemporary mind. (I think)

Alive in Jogja again

Everything is groovy and swell here in Yogyakarta, this small and rustic city of cultural yeeha! I am fine. nothing has changed much except Agus Suwage's studio is bigger, brighter and more beautiful.

The food is good and cheap and everyone has been quite hospitable, warm and helpful. I shall rest now because time is moving pretty slow and I am enjoying it every second. Cheers and viva les happy...

Breda brotha...

The weekend was crazy....crazier than I have expected...on Friday night, we watched an Indonesian Horror Telemovie called 'Jelangkong'. The thing about horror movies these days, its either they freak the shit out of you or you are the freak. Its a aesthetically beautiful film with fantastic cinematography; but why must all spirits look like Sadako from The Ring? geez

Lynn's party on Saturday night was pretty wicked with all the satanic delicacies and intoxicating fruity mayhem. Topic of the night which were discussed intermittenly were about politics, racial differences, media, Berita Harian, bunnies as the house MC going around offering tequila shots to the free-loading guest. All I could say was, in the midst of the madding crowd I lost myself in the inner space of my warped interior, whatever that meant. I got sloshed...

So when Sloshed Monsters get together they will go to a party, so they went for Pop Tart in an entourage of 20, all I could remember was all the vehicles were parked in a 'mod' - like manner. We came out and entered into the space and we just got into some strange gyrated movements like ringworms on fire. And that was 0300hrs in the morning, as most people were leaving the club. Strangely it didn't really matter what was playing the fact that Pop Tart are known for getting the BPMs all wrong for their transitions...whether it was GNR with Radiohead back to back. But drowning in the space of familiar sound turned me into a bewildered mini-dancing prankster hooka pooka with the return of the mini-pogoistic/nihilistic/anti-hero movement in B major.

Everything ended at about 6am, and I got back into my consciouness with breakfast at almost 7, Nasi Lemak woke me up...at the age of new world order and regaining spiritual faith, I helplessly put myself into a state of pure madness...claiming old vices with new vision still neglecting the fabric stitched of the nation. At the end of the day, in the name of good fun, the highestness of being alive...we only live once. So, let's not grow up on weekends please. never...
