The Week is Ending, don't forget your rocking shoes

To live a life of an artist is as good as jumping into a ring of fire, sometimes you can do all the most luxurious things in life, sometimes the only luxury is to cuddle up with someone you love. If not, with the friends around you limping in unison under the psychotic strobe lights to the sound of our united taste.
At times you ask yourself, are all these things worthwhile?

You feel that this expression worth something, spiritually and emotionally, then, you found a book about Talking Heads, and you feel there is still hope, then once again, geographically you are still at where you were born. And once again, you search aimlessly for the drive, when its at halt thats when you feel the most retarded.
Then you start to think about Jamaica, Bob Marley and reggae, or even REM, the hope comes back again.

The other day, I had a conversation with a friend, who told me about watching 'Live on 5' (a defunct tv programme in the 90s showcasing some local bands hosted by Gurmit Singh), he told me about seeing local indie rock bands Padres, Groofy Grooves, ESP and many others on tv. That was the closest thing we could get something similar to Top of The Pops.

I guess that's the reason why I started to get myself into being 'an artist', not a proper context of the occupational list in many forms we have to fill in. Life is nothing without a struggle, a struggle with yourself, society, religion, identity, ethnicity, new world order, indie rock, radio stations, politics, freedom, liberation, desperation, depression, alcoholism, bourgeouisies, god, faith, devotion and hope. I believe this will go on...the feeling of being alive is when you realised after so many years there are many more things to learn. Its infuriating but all worthwhile...

The New Frontier

Hello there,
its mid-year, is life supposed to be on a stand-still or I am just giving away a foolish grin. I am ready to embrace this new half, I foresee a monolithic apprehension to the lord of beezee-fiesta will maul me to my chunkiest meat. The Arts Fest is around the corner, not sure what to catch, but will definitely catch something worth the money.

POP Tart session is about music of our youths thrown back into our senses that spearheaded a jubilation of mad cathartic dance moves with drunkard acquisitions, get it or don't get it, it doesn't really matter, its about there and then you puke out your sonic defenses with karate steps and you rejuvenate the weakest spine in your body and rejoice.

Let's be happy and wrinkle free!

Monday is The New Friday

Monday is the new Friday, someone said that to me last night. The theory behind that is if you were to get sloshed on Friday, you will be too weak to carry on the next day, Sunday will then be too late. Not sure of the logic behind the logic, last night was quite a mayhem.

I had to entertain the interns and crew from MegaMedia who came to rampage the whole studio with their gear and all. Me being me, I felt sympathetic with all these Mass Commettes who are doing their internship for the production house, so I gave in, did the interview with painless answers and willingly submit myself to some stupid TV protocols. ah, whatever...but I did convince them that a scene with Manic Jango running down the hill was just too cliche. Yes, they listened to me. (Thank God) I could not afford to donate my sweat for this sorry-we-can't-pay-you-its-good-for-your-portfolio interview.

It was alright...yes I know...

The Monday Session at Bar None was pretty lacklustre due to the fact I was pretty sober when I David Sparkle started to play. I am not sure why, the post-rock thingy does not seem to spill the groove in me. Perhaps...I'm just old fashioned. I needed something more uplifting last night, these got me thinking about a close friend of mine, who told me about Sigur Ross's music made her more depressed than ever.

If you are such a depressive person, you wouldn't want to go deeper into searching for the antidote, all you want is an upper, not as a form of fabrication or escapism but to choke the clogged depressive state and fill them up with joyful and optimistic sensibilities.

But I love Death of Cinema definitely, as Nick mentioned in the middle of the set, Tim the drummer was their secret weapon. The night was pretty sombre, but the topic on David Felton, the editor of Rolling Stones Magazine in the early 70s got the whole night moving towards a natural Gonzo spirit.

'Rock' is exhausted, we need Technotronic now! I mean it!

The Wedding of The Sweetest Thing

The funniest thing about wedding, sometimes or most of the time with or without consent, it brings people together. Yes, under one roof, for the first time ever, 2 of my ex-girlfriends and together with my present one all under one roof in an event of our blessed union of souls. Amazing.

And the different tables were like a seperation between the classic, neo-classic and the Al Capone. Seriously, it felt like a strange tension was in the air, like a triad meeting except that we didn't have guns, but a whole nostalgic ammo in our heads.

The bodies were familiar with each other historically, so it felt like floating in between skins, old wound, old flame, new misery and optimistic upsurge.

Well, and I've known Mimi since the days of my infamous intoxicated sand-dipped, psychedelic journey through velvet landscapes and sonic lush, warped relationships and other assorted fruitful mayhem. I was forced to believe that she is Mrs Mimi, like for example, now if she plays the bass, we have to remind ourselves, that's Mrs Mimi on bass. Wow!

Its like a replica of 'Thurston Moore-Kim Gordon' magical dream come true.

I've been getting loads of invitations, next week, my primary school classmate whom I've not seen for 15 years will be getting married. And all this is because her mum met my mum in a market. Can you believe that? Its a diabolical network of International Invitation, its a mafia-like structure where everybody knows everybody in this small town.

I love weddings if they come with the the BatuQadar Kompang troupe, the gossiping aunts, the fantastic food, the hangers on, the unwed youths, the overwhelming stage decor, the tradional dancersand the souveniers.

Likewise, we had champagne and wine glasses for souveniers, how thoughtful of Mimi, for giving us such important gifts. We are all united again as one, in the name of love...

STAR WARS fever is back again!

I borrowed a documentary on the Star Wars Trilogy from the library, its 2 hours long, the dvd captured the in depth, rare behind-the-scene footages and loads of George Lucas in pensive mode shots. The quasi hippie Industrial, Light and Magic crew, X-Wing fighters models....loads of them.

The whole day was devoted to thinking about Lucas and his vision/empire, Episode I and II, were a huge disappointment I would say. I am not sure how relevant STAR WARS is now in an era of broadband, Playstation and XBOX.

I grew up embracing the Force, there's no doubt about it. There was even the Star Wars ice cream, if you grew up in the 80s, Star Wars were like the milestone of your life, maybe...I remember my dad brought us to cinema to catch Return of The Jedi, super awesome. We got back home, me and my brother will find umbrellas or broomsticks, we imagined they were real light sabers.

My brother always fought for his position as Han Solo or Luke Skywalker, then for me, I was the Ewok or R2D2 (I was only 5 years old). I still can remember all these moments, we had a huge collection of Star Wars figurines, and sometimes we got so intense into the fighting mode that we would burn their heads off...so most of the faces were either charred or gone from their necks.

I admire Lucas truly for his vision, commitment and passion. He inspired Peter Jackson, James Cameron to name a few. His mates were Spielberg, De Palma and Ford Coppola. We can never get back to those golden era of Solid Gold and Liat Towers' B-Boys.

CONTROL ROOM LIVE UNIT

Do check this project out by Choy Ka Fai and George Chua! Interesting stuff ya 'all!

CONTROLROOMLIVEUNIT
Enter a performance without performer/s where the backline of the theatre
the control room, becomes the mainline in this mirage of live
video, sound and light within an empty space.

Controlroomliveunit is a collaborative work by video artist Choy Ka
Fai and sound artist George Chua, with the lighting designed by Lim Woan
Wen. In this performance the artists hope to experiment and explore
the possibilities of an inter-relationship between these elements with
various techniques such as computer programming (for example MIDI) as
well as sensory devices. Research for this project began in December
2004 and will culminate in the first presentation.

Performance Date: 20th and 21st May 2005

Forced Session at The None-Vomitted Bar

Mood: Creative
Music: I Figured You Out by Elliot Smith

Last night, Bar None Session was weird...at some point in time of that blurry moment, I was on stage with Joe and Force Vomit singing 'Another Brick In The Wall'. Me and my nonsense, I had to slot in a refrain from Digable Planet and Vanilla Ice, the only lyrical rap phrase I've known in my entire life. Well I wouldn't count 2 'Live' Crew as part of the list, but hey, all was in the name of rock, fun and doodle.

On the other end, me and Dom were discussing about how great to see dancing beaurecrats ending the day with some dancing, and a girl with a sweater that acts as a cape grooving to James' 'Sit Down'.

We did some rough takes on some Tiramisu songs last night at Sound Mix, well, we sounded horrendous, imagine, back in those days, those jazz band recorded their album live in the studio. We are all little pampered souls...

I am up and feeling creative again, got a lot of crazy/warped/cabaret ideas in my head...received a couple of positive invitation yesterday. Don Bosco (the guitarist of the legendary Twang Bar Kings) who is currently producing some art programme for Arts Central wants me to be part of this new show similar to Art Nation. KYTV's first television interview was for Art Nation, horrifyingly bad experience, I am not a big fan of doing TV interviews, you look so static and most of the time they will cut the chunky informative part and slot in the minor not so meaty details.

Another good news will be the debut for my solo music project, 'Dahlan Francesca' at The Esplanade. Will be trying out new lo-fi soul romantics with Syed Ahmad (Stoned Revivals) in July. So beware, plus before our set, the infamous local 'indie-jazz' siblings, Akira and Sabrina from Moods will be taking the stage.

Mr Walking Encyclopedia and Mind Liberator aka Rizal at Julie's last
Friday.

INTOX / DETOX

Friday night's Shanmugam's vigil was solemn, sad and optimistic. Many familiar faces including Rizal, whom I have not seen for ages, he told me he has been travelling around Indonesia. Rizal is a character you can define with in many Indie-films, the Brood-intellectual/Beat/all that jazz individual living in a modern time. A walking encyclopedia, he talks about life, art, music ...anything deeply, but you can't see his work. Once somebody told me, Rizal lives in a house with a light bulb, reads ton of books with cans of stout. You may seem to know him but actually you don't know him at all.

I spent my Friday night at Julie's, celebrating the joyous of living life dangerously. I haven't done this for a long time, you know staying up late till the sun rise, and having cold prata and stale curry. Talking about everything from Techno-Sahara, structure, organisation, oppression, art, life, clowns, and all that swing. Its all different now...lifestyle of the bo ho ho.

Saturday night, was brilliant....again, it felt like I was re-visiting the past, getting cheap highs from the convenience store before hitting it on the dance floor. Akira and gang organised some party at HOME ,(formerly MadMonks) which I think has a better ventilation system, due to the state I was in, I thought we were having some White Xmas Party.

Music was good, lots of mad dancing, old company, new company, weird people from the past, strange gestures...parties will still be parties in 30 years time.

This song is mad... but I like

Lyrics from a mad song, Mike Patton writes the craziest lyrics ever, this song reminds me so much of Paul McCarthy's work of food and sex. Enjoi!

SQUEEZE ME MACARONI

I wanna lock Betty Crocker in the kitchen
And knock her upper during supper
Clutter up her butter gutter
Hostess Ding Dong wrapped an eggroll around my wong
While Dolly Madison proceded to ping my pong
Your Milky Way is M'n'M in your britches
And I'll tell you Baby Ruth it looks mighty delicious
Keep blowing my gum, cuz here I come
I'm gonna get you all sticky with my Bubble Yum
Knick knack paddywhack and give your dog a bone, baby
I was givin' some head to some french bread
It was a four course orgy on the spread of my bed
French kissin' french fries in my Fruit of the Looms
I get deeper penetration with a fork and a spoon
I got yogurt meat loaf smeared all over my ass
I stick my weiner in two buns and and then give it the gas
Sour cream from my spleen into Levi jeans
Gonna bust the seams with my refried beans
Ronald McDonald just loves to be fondled
With Big Mac he'll fuck it like a Chicken McNugget
Colonel Sanders wants to goose Granny's loose caboose
He's gonna give her a boost with that Kentucky fried juice
Sooper doop poop scoop, loop de loop, chicken coop
Shoot some hoop, top sirloin from the groin
Topped with dick cheese, sneeze, wheeze,
From the skeez disease, wooi!
Take a dump, baby, squirt some gravy
Pour some sugar on me, honey, make it brown & runny
Give a little Flavor Flav, back from the grave
Gonna burn some toast, pump some humpin' rump roast
Knick knack paddywhack, jump in the sack, in fact
Jerk the smack and crack Jack from the back
Bananarama or ramabanana
Fuckin' Barry Manilow on the Copa Cabana
Squeeze me macaroni, slop your face with my bologna
You gotta syphon the spinach, you gotta cream the corn
Sperm scrambles the eggs and a meal is born
Cookin' like a beginner, but I'm goin' up in her
I had Fritos for lunch I'm havin' bush for dinner
Chef Boyardee and the Three Muskateers
Shove Charleston Chews in their rears like queers
Holy moly, guacamole! said my Chips Ahoy
I'm gonna pinch a ravioli on the Pillsbury dough boy
Knick knack paddywhack and give your dog a boner, baby
We came to pottie...we came to pottie down your throat

The Weekend is Here Again, hoorah...(sigh)

Mood: Gloomy
Music: Squeeze Me Macaroni by Mr Bungle

The weather is becoming gloomy, wet and grainy again, after almost a month long of dry spell.

The Fedex Van has been making its regular appearence here in Siglap, we have been sending packages of our KYTV DVDs, Ka5s' works and not sure what else, to countries around the world. I really like the way the van just parked handsomely in front of your house. Trust me, its like in an ad or something. And I'm not sure why I am excited. Me and my senseless excitement...

Yesteday, hung out with my old college buddy, Is Vicious, the ageless man who hasn't changed a bit since the first time I met him, except for the length of his hair and wrinkles.

The Shanmugam vigil is on tonight, I will be closing the event. There will be loads of people from the arts community and I have not prepared my speech. I hate preparing speeches, because I always get nervous when I have to read something in public. Yes, I hate public speaking! In public space I can be such a pubic...you can tell me to do silly things, jump into a ring of fire, dance like Taufik Batisah or whatever.

But when it comes to delivering a paragraph of written text, the feeling is like you have all these eyes gawking at you like they have some kind of a hidden desire to maul you up when you say the wrong word/sentence.

At the end of the day, I am just a boy next door.

sink was too high and my height did not allow me to execute the action.
I decided not to follow the instruction, and washed my hands instead.
Maybe, will do it another day.

Nice Dream

Mood: Alive
Music: Around My Smile
by Hope Sandoval and The Warm Inventions

I had a really strange dream last night. My new creation of parachute for the masses, it was like a D-I-Y kit that you can buy from any toy stores in the world. Then it got stranger, I wrote these at 4 in the morning:

Twirl your toes like jelly beans,
Its a sin to be seen in the scene...
Kerb the need to radiate your shouts,
Implode your anger like a nuclear warfare.

Cro magno and Cyrano: melody thieves

Bursting bladder of jelly confetti,
Celebrate the death of dazzling daisy...

Gossiping waitresses talking about the middle finger of a man with no fingers...
I am living in a Mandarin Orange.
Trace my heart, you can feel the calypso...
Pretending to pretend, the past/present intense

Make your Art with a dart, poking blood and spewing suds?

Hope is an excuse to make you believe....

Its already May, people!

The room has been tidied, and I need to get into the groove of working again. And I have been cooking and making sandwiches at home, terribly sick and tired of eating the food in Siglap. Sab taught me the trick to cooking pasta with 'cream sauce'.

Boil some pasta and get those $1.90 cream of chicken Campbell soup, mix them thoroughly, there you go, pasta with cream of chicken soup/sauce. Add some pepper and wowee, you have the bestest and easiest pasta in the world.

Nothing compares to cooking a D-I-Y meal, it is like painting and if you put in some hard work, you can actually feel your sweat and soul in it. All it takes is lots of passion and good will. Cooking is the closest thing to being alive. Sorry, if I sound like Jamie Oliver.

If you haven't heard about this, I will be giving a short speech and deliver a song. Hope to see you there!

6th May Candlelit Vigil

No to death penalty

All are welcome

Fri 6th May 2005 Time: 7 – 10 pm
Venue: Furama City Centre Hotel
[Level 4], Canton Room,
60 Eu Tong Sen Street, Singapore 059804

The evening will involve a series of candlelit music, performances and readings by concerned, non-partisan individuals as an expression of our 3C's:“Compassion”, “Care”, & “Concern” over the death penalty ruling for Shanmugam Murgesu and those on death-row.

Organized by: Think Centre - Concerned Civil Society Initiatives
www.thinkcentre.org

Come to the vigil, light a candle and sign a petition calling on the government to declare an immediate moratorium on the death Penalty. Save the life of Shanmugam and those on the death-row.

____________________________________________

If you cannot make it to the vigil, all are encouraged, wherever you are, to Light a Candle or shine a torch on the night of May 6th as a symbol of life "Jeeva Jhoti"

* Save the life of Shanmugam and those on the death-row. This cruel, inhumane and degrading punishment has to stop. Shanmugam, and his family plead with fellow Singaporeans and the international community to stop all these cruel hangings. None, he adds, knows the grief of these families and the dependents of those who are executed.

* Express our concern as citizens and residents of Singapore that the death penalty is being used inconsistently with the criteria of absolute necessity and proportionality in relation to drug trafficking cases.

* Call on the government to remove the mandatory capital punishment for simple drug possession. Overcoming social problems and bring criminal masterminds to justice is much more effective then hanging those presumed to be traffickers for simple possession of drugs.

Sleepy Eyes and Lazy Bones

Mood: Lazy Wizzy
Music: In The Meantime by Spacehog

Help me...I am guilty of being lazy, very...very... guilty, the disease of nothingness and redundant dreams are coming to me and attacking me like thousand point-blank arrows. It gets too comfortable when you start to do something so simple and harmless, like reading, surfing or listening to music, yes, its true when they say do something in moderation.

I have difficulties when it comes to situation like that, I tend to go astray, my weakness is being comfortable. It is time to start problematizing things, or start drawing, hybernation days are over doode...

Last night recording at Leonard's was fun, exciting, fast and fury...I have to jog again ,beginning to feel I need to drink Anlene for my bones, it was Naz's Birthday, went to meet up with them. We chilled at Liberte for a few hours....I was too tired to do this 'hang-out' thing.

We need to build some 'shower-loo' on the streets, for people on the go and wanting to beat the heat. What good does it do, by mid-day you smell like fried cuttlefish? If you don't have an extre top, by evening you will smell like a pair of smelly socks plus plus.

Do you remember Color Me Badd? Then try to recall, the song, 'I adore Me Amore'...
